Environmentalist Phil Radford Endorses Ben Jealous For Governor

TODAY, Phil Radford endorsed Ben Jealous, former President & CEO of the NAACP for governor of Maryland. Radford was the youngest ever Executive Director of Greenpeace USA and co-founded Democracy Initiative with Jealous. This is the third endorsement Jealous has received from an environmental group or individual after Friends of the Earth Action and Bill McKibben.

Overall, Jealous has received fourteen endorsements from progressive groups and individuals. Previous endorsements have come from: Maryland Working Families, SEIU, Maryland Postal Workers Union, Our Revolution, Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Cory Booker, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, National Nurses United, Friends of the Earth Action, Environmentalist Bill McKibben, Former Obama Administration Official and activist Van Jones, The National Capital Baptist Convention, and Executive Director of the National LGBTQ Task Force, Rea Carey*.

Radford endorsed Jealous with the following statement:

“When we have a federal government more concerned with protecting corporate profits than strengthening our environment and improving public health, then we must elect strong leaders at the state level who will stand up.

Ben Jealous’ candidacy represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to elect a true progressive and lifelong advocate who will fight to protect Maryland’s environment and build a clean energy economy that provides 21st century jobs.”

In response, Jealous said:

“I’m grateful to receive Phil’s support as we continue building a movement to get Maryland back to doing big things again. I have long argued that climate change is a public health issue, an economic issue, and a moral issue that we must act courageously to combat. When I am governor, Maryland will return to being a global leader in protecting the environment and growing our green economy.”
