Senator Kamala Harris Endorses Ben Jealous For Governor Of Maryland

California Senator Becomes the 22nd Progressive Organization Or Individual To Endorse Jealous’ Campaign For Governor

Silver Spring, MD — TODAY, March 23, 2018, Ben Jealous, former National President and CEO of the NAACP, announced California Senator Kamala Harris endorsement for his campaign for governor of Maryland, marking the 22nd endorsement his campaign has received from a progressive organization or individual. Harris is a national leader on immigration reform, including being an outspoken advocate for DREAMers, and has aggressively fought for comprehensive criminal justice reform throughout her career. Before her election to the Senate, Senator Harris served as a prosecutor and California’s attorney general.

Jealous was named Marylander of the Year because of his leadership in helping to pass the Maryland DREAM Act and was arrested outside of Donald Trump’s White House leading a peaceful demonstration to save the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. Jealous has also made criminal justice reform a cornerstone of his bid for governor, previously releasing comprehensive plans for police reform. In the coming weeks, Jealous will also release a comprehensive criminal justice reform plan.

“Ben Jealous is a champion of working people. From his days working as a community organizer and civil rights leader to his exceptional leadership of the NAACP, Ben has shown the courage to take on the biggest challenges we face,” said Harris. “Everyday we see the damage being done to our country by this administration and we need leaders in our states like Ben, who have shown the political courage our families need right now. Maryland has the opportunity to elect a leader who comes to politics as a civil rights leader, a businessman, an educator, and a father. He understands we elect leaders to stand up for working people and vulnerable communities so their voices are heard and change happens. That’s how he’s led his whole life, and that’s how he’ll lead as governor.”

In response, Jealous said:

“I’m grateful to receive Senator Harris’ support as we continue building a movement to get Maryland back to doing big things again,” Jealous said. “Senator Harris has fought for working families across the nation, including the fight to protect the millions of DACA-eligible DREAMers across our country, 34,000 of whom live in Maryland. I’m thankful for her support and proud to have her as an ally as we build a broad diverse coalition committed to getting our schools back to number one, passing Medicare-for-All, enacting a $15 minimum wage, achieving criminal justice reform, and further advancing the rights of DREAMers in our state.”
