African American Coalition of Howard County Endorse Ben Jealous For Governor

Former National NAACP President and CEO Continues To Lead The Democratic Field With Nearly 30 Endorsements Representing Thousands of Maryland Families

Silver Spring, MD — TODAY, Wednesday, May 16, 2018, Ben Jealous, former National President & CEO of the NAACP, received an endorsement from the African American Coalition of Howard County (AACHC). This is the 29th endorsement from a progressive organization or individual Jealous has received during his campaign for governor.

AACHC was founded over 20 years ago and is considered a leading advocate of affordable housing, with leadership team members having served on the General Growth Housing Planning Committee and the Howard Hughes Corporation redevelopment committee for downtown Columbia, MD. Additional areas of focus include healthcare and sustainable development for African American owned businesses.

“Given Ben Jealous’ extensive background as a civil rights leader and community organizer, as well as his courage in issuing the most detailed policy proposals on issues affecting the African American community, we are proud to issue our support for his candidacy,” said Rev. Robert A. F. Turner, President of the African American Coalition of Howard County. “Ben understands that when it comes to education, healthcare and reforming our broken criminal justice system, there remains great inequality, and our state needs a governor with the courage and experience to bring us all together to achieve the change our communities so desperately need.”

“I’m grateful to have the African American Coalition of Howard County join our movement to get Maryland back to doing big things again,” Jealous said. “As a civil rights leader and community organizer, I’ve spent my fighting and winning the battles necessary to achieve real equality. Now is not the time for timid and passive leadership. Now is the time for bold, progressive and courageous change, which is why I’m proud to be the only candidate to have released comprehensive plans to reform our criminal justice system, end mass incarceration, and ensure every Marylander has quality healthcare through a Medicare For All system. Our campaign is continuing to build a broad, robust coalition for change, and I’m excited to have the African American Coalition of Howard County working with us to build a better Maryland.”
