Silver Spring — TODAY, October 1, 2018, Ben Jealous, former National President and CEO of the NAACP received the endorsement of Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States. Jealous worked closely to help pass many of the monumental achievements accomplished by the Obama Administration, most notably the Affordable Care Act which Jealous seeks to build on as Governor. Recently, Obama has come out in favor of Medicare-For-All calling it a “good new idea”. Jealous has made his plan for Medicare-for-All a core part of his policy agenda and polls show that the majority of Marylanders support it. As President of the NAACP, Jealous spearheaded a successful 1.2 million voter turnout effort which led to him being called the “unsung hero of Obama’s re-election”.
“Ben Jealous is an accomplished civil rights leader, businessman, and advocate for working people,” said Obama. “His exemplary work as national President of the NAACP and as a leader in Maryland fighting for the DREAM Act, marriage equality, voting rights, and the abolition of the death penalty make him the best candidate for Governor. As a social impact investor, Ben has worked closely with small businesses, creating jobs and building a more inclusive economy. He has the vision, experience, and courage to move families forward, which is why I ask all Marylanders to stand with me in supporting his election as Maryland’s next Governor.”
“I’m honored to receive this endorsement from President Barack Obama,” said Jealous. “Across the country, progressive candidates are seeking to build on the successes of his Administration and continue to deliver real solutions for working people. As governor, I’ll build on the Affordable Care Act as well as President Obama’s progressive economic agenda to pass serious healthcare reform as well as expand economic opportunity for all Marylanders.
Jealous has been endorsed by several key national figures that represent the breadth of the Democratic Party. These surrogates support Jealous’ progressive economic agenda which is focused on expanding educational opportunity and ambitious healthcare reform. Senators Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand and Elizabeth Warren in addition to Vice President Joe Biden have all endorsed Jealous campaign for governor in addition to progressive organizations representing over 100,000 Marylanders.
